Heavy Vehicle Advanced Apprenticeship Programme

This dedicated 3 year programme gives emphasis to electronics, diagnosis and computer management systems. All aspects of heavy vehicle technology are embedded in the programme. Most of your time you will spend in the dealership gaining hands-on experience and on the job training under the guidance of a trained mentor. During your 15 two week periods of residential training at the Volvo Training Academy you will cover technology in engines, transmissions and the latest electronic diagnostic techniques covering all vehicle systems.

Aftersales Advanced Apprenticeship Programme

This two year programme has a large emphasis on all aspects of stock management, product and motor vehicle knowledge, effective customer service techniques and having the ability to ensure the customers' needs are identified and expectations are exceeded. Most of your time will be spent learning on the job, under the guidance of a mentor, you will also receive 10 weeks in-depth residential training at the Volvo Training Academy, During your residential training at the Volvo Training Academy you will cover advanced stock management, motor vehicle and product knowledge, effective customer service skills and all aspects of the selling process.

The Volvo Training Academy is based at Stephenson College in Coalville. The workshops at the college are fully fitted out with the latest Volvo vehicles to give you a cutting edge training programme and enable you to use the most up to date equipment and tools.
Our industry is changing at a rapid pace; therefore we have committed to ensure our Volvo time served, Master Technician, Trainers always have the latest knowledge on our product, to enhance your training experience.

On successfully completing the Volvo Apprentice Programme, you will have gained national qualifications recognised throughout the automotive industry:

  • Technician - L3 Diploma in Heavy Vehicle Principles VRQ (technical certificate) & L3 Heavy Vehicle Competence QCF (practical competence).
  • Parts - L3 Diploma in Vehicle Parts Principles VRQ (technical certificate) & L3 Diploma in Vehicle Parts Competence QCF (practical competence).

If you show dedication & commitment throughout your apprenticeship, there maybe an opportunity for you to advance your studies through Higher education. In addition, Volvo holds an annual event where you and your family will be invited to a special graduation day to receive your certificates and possibly a special merit award.

Frequently asked questions

Where will I work?

In order to gain a place on the Apprenticeship programme, you must be sponsored by a Volvo dealership local to your home. Here, you will be a full time employee of the dealer from day one and become part of the technical/aftersales team while you train.

Will I be a paid employee at the dealership?

Yes. All apprentices who are successful in gaining a position at a Volvo dealership will be contracted and paid as a full time employee with that dealer.

Where do I complete my training?

You will carry out your training through fifteen two-week periods at the bespoke Volvo Training Academy, based at Stephenson College in Coalville, Leicestershire. The centre is equipped with the latest Volvo vehicles and you will have use of the most up to date equipment and tools. You will also be trained by Volvo time served master technicians, with the latest Volvo knowledge.

What qualifications do I achieve?

On completion you will have attained the following qualifications:

Technician - IMI L3 Diploma in Heavy Vehicle Principles VRQ (technical certificate) & L3 Heavy Vehicle Competence QCF (practical competence)

Parts - IMI L3 Diploma in Vehicle Parts Principles VRQ (technical certificate) & L3 Diploma in Vehicle Parts Competence QCF (practical competence)

Both the above qualifications are recognised and highly valued throughout the motor industry.

Does my training stop once I reach IMI Level 3?

No, it doesn't. At Volvo you will be encouraged to increase your knowledge with future technical training courses, exciting team building weekends and even the option for the right apprentice to study for Higher education. The opportunities within a global organisation like Volvo are endless. How much will the training cost me?

The training is completely free of charge and paid for by Volvo. The only cost to you is your dedication and commitment to succeed.

Where will I stay?

During your block release, you will stay in hand-picked accommodation,  near to the Training Centre. Transport to and from the Training Centre will also be provided if required. The cost of the accommodation will be met by your sponsorship dealer.

Who can enrol?

To enrol, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be aged 16 or over
  • Have grade C or above in GCSE Math's, English and Information and Communication Technology or the Scottish Certificate of Education at grade C or above
