Devizes-based, Wiltshire Transport Training & Development Ltd has taken delivery of its first Volvo truck - an FL 4x2 16-tonne rigid fitted with a box body constructed by TWR Commercial Bodybuilders Ltd.

The short wheelbase, 4,700mm chassis is powered by a Volvo D5K engine rated at 240hp and the truck’s six-speed I-Sync automated manual transmission system drives an 11-tonne single reduction rear axle with a ratio of 3.78:1. Supplied by Pete Swinnerton, Transport Solutions Executive at Truck and Bus Wales and West Ltd, the Medium Cab equipped rigid also features front steel, rear air suspension and 19.5-inch wheels.

The new FL also benefits from a five year Volvo Gold Service Contract, which will be carried out at the Swindon dealerpoint of Truck and Bus Wales and West.

For driver training purposes, the box body is loaded with five tonnes of ballasted IBCs and the company are already reporting positively on the new Volvo.

It’s a case of ‘so far; so good’ with our new Volvo FL,” reports Nick Rees, the owner of Wiltshire Transport Training & Development Ltd., adding, “Volvo is a good strong brand and the short wheelbase FL rigid has a good turning circle.”

After issues with the exhaust regeneration system on another make of truck, Volvo’s manual regeneration facility was a major attraction for this Devizes-based training provider.

Our short mileage stop / start training drives, with their attendant low engine temperature conditions, were proving problematic with our other vehicle makes. A number of exhaust related issues were joined by the possibility of an engine warning lamp coming on during a driving test. That’s a scenario we must avoid,” declares Nick, adding, “With its manual regeneration system, the new Volvo FL eliminates that potential issue completely and a candidate who has trained all week can take their test without concern.”

Wiltshire Transport Training & Development will retain the new Volvo FL for around six years and it joins a fleet of five rigid vehicles and two articulated combinations.

With a company history going back to the late 1970s, Wiltshire Transport Training & Development Ltd has been under the ownership of Nick and Wendy Rees since 2003. The company has established itself as one of the country's leading transport training providers, delivering not only a comprehensive range of ‘one-off’ courses, but also providing a unique and innovative 'whole of life' approach to the concept of training.
