There’s no shortage of power with Volvo’s FH16 range

Designed for the heaviest and most demanding operations, the FH16 is Volvo’s most powerful truck. Its distinctive design expresses the massive capabilities built into it, as well as its level of refinement, plus – of course – it is probably one of the safest and most comfortable workplaces in the industry.
The FH16 heavy truck range

The Volvo FH16 is powered by an in-line, 16 litre Euro-6 diesel engine, which in its highest specification produces 750hp and a phenomenal 3550 Nm of torque, making it the world's most powerful production truck.

The straight six D16K motor is also available with both 550 and 650hp power outputs, with the latter variants boasting torque figures of 2900 and 3150Nm respectively.

Transferring this power to the FH16 range's choice of four single reduction and four hub reduction rear axles, is Volvo's award-winning I-Shift automated manual transmission system.

A 12-speed splitter and range gearbox with an automated gear changing system, I-Shift can be fitted with a compact retarder, power take-off, emergency power steering pump and oil cooler. Five separate I-Shift software control packages also give the customer a chance to tailor their FH16 perfectly to its working environment.

The chassis makes the Volvo FH16 a precision tool on the road. To increase productivity and flexibility, Volvo has increased the dual front axle loads from 18 to 20 tonnes. And if maximum ground clearance is required, GRAS-G2 air suspension is now available on the Volvo FH16.

The FH16 chassis is available in four different chassis heights in a huge range of rigid and tractor unit specifications, including an 8x4 heavy haulage prime mover in the latter group.

Volvo's unique Tandem Axle Lift and Dynamic Steering systems can also be specified with the range.

Tandem Axle Lift allows the rearmost drive axle on the tandem bogie to be disengaged and raised, to reduce fuel consumption and turning radius. By pushing a button on the dashboard, the driver can raise the axle when the truck is unloaded. When the truck is loaded, the axle automatically lowers itself and engages.

Volvo's Dynamic Steering is an active system with torque overlay. This delivers more steering force at low speeds, reduces steering kicks and keeps the steering wheel straight when braking on split friction.

The steering wheel returns automatically to neutral position both when driving forward and when reversing. Dynamic Steering is also available on trucks with dual front axles, dramatically reducing the load on the driver's neck, back and shoulders.

There are many common features across the four aerodynamically-designed cab types on offer with the Volvo FH16 range. The Low Sleeper, Standard Sleeper, Globetrotter and Globetrotter XL cab options all provide unparalleled comfort on the inside, with world-class safety on the outside.

This perfect workplace incorporates a visually stunning design that stands out on the road. Every interior component and every conceivable space has been meticulously designed to make the driver more comfortable - whether they're behind the wheel, resting or sound asleep in the bunk.

When it was first launched in 1993, the Volvo FH16 was the most powerful tractor in the world, with its ‘mighty' 16-litre engine developing up to 520hp. Now 25 years on, the FH16 is still the world's most powerful production truck with a ‘whopping' 36% increase in power and 42% additional torque over the 1993 original !
