Delivering leading safety performance and an attractive driver environment, Volvo Trucks also gives you a full choice of solutions to reduce CO₂ and improve air quality and noise levels. From biodiesel and HVO or LNG, bio-LNG, and CNG drivelines to electric trucks and hydrogen-powered trucks in the future. As well as the latest, most energy- and fuel-efficient engines, aerodynamics, and services – all while ensuring you get the performance and productivity you need. Here, you can explore your options and the best way forward for you and your operation.
Whatever your operation, route, or readiness level, we have the right driveline to cut emissions while keeping your business reliable and profitable.
Volvo electric trucks have covered more than 250 million kilometers for customers in over 50 countries. Meeting the needs of many industries – all the way from long haul and construction to city distribution and waste management. Over the years, we’ve also helped customers optimise the operation, charging, and servicing of electric trucks for a smooth and profitable transition.
CO₂ reduction:
Up to 95% net CO₂ reduction with electricity from renewable sources
Advantages:
Zero tailpipe emissions for CO₂ & NOx, low noise, relatively cheap energy
Considerations:
Access to non-fossil fuel electricity and charging infrastructure
Where infrastructure is in place, you can benefit from Volvo gas-powered trucks running on LNG (liquefied natural gas) or bio-LNG (liquefied biogas). Safe and non-flammable, the gas is combusted with 5-10% diesel or HVO to ignite the fuel. Suitable for long-haul transport and on-road construction, these gas engines match the torque of our diesel engines – so there’s no compromise on performance even while lowering CO₂ emissions. Another medium-duty option is the Volvo FE CNG, which comes with an engine powered exclusively by compressed natural gas or compressed biogas.
CO₂ reduction:
Up to 20% reduction with LNG, 80-100% with bio-LNG, 10% with CNG, and 70-100% with bio-CNG
Advantages:
Good energy density, flexibility to change gas choice
Considerations:
Tailpipe CO₂ and NOx emissions, access to fueling infrastructure
Our diesel engines are the result of decades of development to optimize fuel efficiency and lower costs – while strengthening performance and productivity with added power and torque. You also get the flexibility to run on HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) and biodiesel to move further toward zero emissions. These fuels are either pure e.g. HVO100 and B100 or a blend e.g. B20 that is 80% conventional diesel and 20% biodiesel.
CO₂ reduction:
30-70% with biodiesel, 30-90% with HVO
Advantages:
High/good energy density, flexibility to change to renewable fuels
Considerations:
Tailpipe CO₂ and NOx emissions, access to renewable fuels
For future consideration. It is already clear that hydrogen fuel cells and combustion engines have the potential to be an essential element for the future of transportation. Volvo is currently focused on developing and testing our hydrogen-powered trucks in the real world. We look forward to helping customers integrate them into their operations and sustainability journeys.
CO₂ reduction:
Up to 90% net CO₂ reduction
Advantages:
Zero tailpipe CO₂ emissions
Considerations:
High energy price, shortage of green hydrogen, and infrastructure not in place currently
