Four new Volvo FH rigids help deliver a full house at Fly By Nite
Well-known specialist suppliers of vehicles and dedicated drivers to the music, entertainment, corporate and exhibition industries, Fly By Nite, have added four ultra high specification Volvo FH rigids to its fleet.

Supplied by Richard Moorse, Area Sales Manager at Volvo Truck and Bus Centre East Anglia, the four FH 6x2 low height chassis benefit from full air suspension and are fitted with box bodies by Transport Enterprises Ltd. The 26 tonne rigids are powered by D13K engines with a power output of 460hp.

To improve driving comfort and safety the group were also specified with Active Safety packages which include Adaptive Cruise Control with Emergency Brake Assistance, Lane Changing Support and Driver Alert Support systems. Fly By Nite also opted for Globetrotter XL Cabs with I-Park Cool climate control, as the FHs’ will regularly be away from base for anything between eight and 12 weeks at a time.

Fly By Nite operates a fleet of 170 vehicles from its headquarters in Redditch and the FH rigids are a first for the company. “We’ve used Volvo’s FH tractor units for many years now and the drivers like the comfort standards and build quality. We looked at the FH range for our 26 tonne vehicle requirements and were very impressed at the high specification that could be achieved with them,” reports Richard Brown, Transport Manager at Fly By Nite Ltd.

Operating in countries as far afield as Morocco, Russia and Iceland, the new Volvos’ will also work across Europe and into Turkey on a regular basis. The box bodies come with tuck away tail lifts and removable loading ramps, which are stowed for transit beneath the FHs’ chassis.

Fly By Nite Ltd expect to retain the four FH rigids for around eight years. “Despite the long distances involved with concert tours and exhibitions, our vehicles usually remain parked at venues for a given time. Therefore our annual mileage totals are not excessive,” Richard notes adding, “We have our own in-house maintenance facility and body shop. It’s not unusual for one of our fitters to go on tour with a major job, to carry out the required safety checks, servicing or repairs at the various venues en route.”

The four FH 26 tonners have been in service since March. “The drivers absolutely love the new Volvos. Doing back to back tours and being away for two or three months at a time is the acid test for any truck cab,” Richard concludes.
