Operating from Fuller’s long-standing Griffin Brewery – opened in 1845 – the new electric truck’s arrival will contribute to Asahi’s aims to achieve carbon neutrality across its operations, with the FE Electric supplying pubs across the capital with the customer’s diverse range of beers, ales and ciders.
Sam Goodenough, Sustainability Manager, Asahi UK, says: “We’re thrilled to partner with Volvo Trucks as we take delivery of our first electric brewery dray truck, a significant milestone in our journey towards our goal of Net Zero across our whole value chain by 2040.
“Our FE Electric will be one of the first of its kind to enter London, demonstrating the potential of electric drays to create quieter streets, support the city’s clean air initiatives and build a more sustainable future for the communities we serve. Working with Volvo on this project helps us to ensure we can continue to deliver our premium products to London’s pubs in a way that supports both our business and the planet.”
Supplied by Guili Chemello, Transport Solutions Executive at Volvo Truck and Bus South & East, the FE Electric directly replaces a similar diesel rigid, inheriting its predecessor’s weekday operating schedule.
Built on a 5,250 mm wheelbase, Asahi UK’s electric rigid has been specified with three batteries, offering an approximate driving range of up to 230 km, providing ample capacity to complete the necessary day-to-day deliveries.
The truck is powered by two electric motors and benefits from a two-speed transmission, offering a smooth and comfortable driving experience.
Mounted with Bevan Group bodywork and a cantilever tail lift, the rigid curtainsider features an additional lower passenger door window to improve visibility while working on London’s busy streets, with the vehicle compliant with the capital’s three-star Direct Vision Standard (DVS) requirements.
Additional safety benefits are unlocked thanks to Forward Collision Warning with emergency braking, Side Collision Avoidance Support, Driver Alert Support and Lane Keeping Support active safety systems.
Drivers will enjoy a comfort-spec heated seat featuring adjustable lumbar support and an extendable seat cushion, with the truck’s cab also including DAB radio, climate control, and a heated windscreen.
The FE Electric is backed by a comprehensive Volvo Gold Contract, covering all maintenance and repairs, and including proactive monitoring of batteries and associated components.
The truck is expected to be in operation within Asahi UK’s distribution fleet for the next seven years.
