Finbarr O'Neill celebrates fifty years with new Volvo FH Tipper

County Cork-based Finbarr O’Neill has taken delivery of a Volvo FH 500 10x4 tipper, liveried to mark the company’s 50th year in business. The truck marks a continuation of the duo’s long-standing relationship, with the customer having purchased its first Volvos in 1989.

Finbarr O’Neill has taken delivery of an FH 500 10x4 tipper to mark the company’s 50th year in business.

Supplied by Mark McCarthy, Transport Solutions Executive at McCarthy Commercials, the new arrival joins a 22-strong fleet, of which approximately two-thirds are Volvos. It will be used to deliver a comprehensive range of sand, aggregates and quarry products from the business's four quarries to customers across Ireland.

The deal is particularly prominent for current Directors Lucia, John, Francis and Finbarr O’Neill, with 2025 marking half a century since their late father, Finbarr O’Neill Senior, spotted an opportunity to meet the demands of the growing construction and farming markets in Cork city and the wider county.

“Our story began 50 years ago when our parents decided to take a chance and start a business from the ground up,” says Finbarr. “They worked hard to make that happen, and those early efforts gave us the foundation we still rely on today. We take great pride in continuing what they began and making sure the business reflects the standards they set.

“Volvo has been a key part of our journey – we also use Volvo loading shovels and dumpers in our quarries, so the brand plays a big role across our entire operation. When we spec’d our latest truck, we wanted something that would stand out and deliver real benefits for its driver. Full air suspension, spacious cab design, and premium features have transformed the experience behind the wheel – the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, especially with regards to the smooth ride.”

Finbarr O’Neill’s rigid – mounted with Fitzgerald tipper bodywork – is powered by Volvo’s proven D13K engine generating 500 hp and 2,500 Nm of torque. Expected to be in service for at least the next six years, it is also equipped with a 12-speed I-Shift transmission, which makes driving easier, safer and more comfortable and can also deliver improved fuel economy.

To further boost driving comfort and practicality, Finbarr O’Neill opted to include front and rear air suspension in the specification. In addition, the decision to select a five-axle configuration was driven by the need to maximise payload capacity, allowing the truck to carry heavier loads of aggregates and decorative stone efficiently.

Inside the cab, creature comforts including an adjustable steering wheel with neck-tilt, dual armrest and leather upholstery ensures a premium driving environment.

As part of the company’s 50th celebrations, the truck is adorned with a special logo to mark the occasion, which, combined with Alcoa Dura-Bright alloys, creates a stand-out finish.

Another key factor behind the latest order was the strong working relationship the business has built with supplying dealer McCarthy Commercials.

“The support we receive from McCarthys is top class,” adds Finbarr. “Their team understands the urgency of our work and responds quickly whenever we need assistance. Whether it is routine servicing or an unexpected breakdown, they act fast and keep us moving. Alongside Volvo’s strong resale value, that partnership is invaluable to us and is one of the key reasons we continue to choose Volvo year after year.”

Backed by a full Volvo Gold contract for maximum peace of mind, the truck is expected to clock up to 70,000 km annually, operating five days a week.

In addition to its headquarters in Ballincollig, Finbarr O’Neill also operates quarries in Ovens, Glenville, Mogeely and Dripsey.
