The decision was made following a successful trial with a demonstrator from local dealer Thomas Hardie Commercials, which highlighted the FH Aeros’ supreme fuel performance and working environment.
Stephen Bratt, Joint Managing Director at David Bratt & Sons said: “Although we have predominantly run other manufacturers in recent years, whenever the time comes for a fleet refresh or expansion, we always make sure we do our due diligence on what products are out there in the market.
“Needless to say, we were suitably impressed with the performance of the Aero demonstrator which highlighted the exceptional driver comfort and fuel efficiency of the latest Volvo trucks.”
Supplied by Paul McNicholas, Customer Solutions Manager at Thomas Hardie Commercials, the two new Aeros are powered by Euro VI-compliant D13TC Step E engines which utilise turbo compounding to produce up to 460 hp and a peak torque of 2,600 Nm. By opting for Volvo’s turbo-compound technology, David Bratt & Sons’ drivers can maintain lower revs and a higher gear for a longer time to deliver a more fuel-efficient journey.
The engines are paired with a 12-speed I-Shift automated gearbox and I-See predictive cruise control to maximise sustainability benefits.
The FH Aeros’ fuel economy potential is extended through their sleek, aerodynamic design, with the cab 24 centimetres longer than that of the standard Volvo FH. The specification also includes an array of new technologies that help to reduce energy consumption and emissions reductions by up to five per cent.
This includes Volvo’s Camera Monitoring System (CMS) which replaces traditional exterior mirrors. The solution increases the driver’s field of view, while performing strongly in rainy and dark conditions, direct sunlight and even when driving in tunnels.
Each new Aero – which will be used for a range of transport solutions from specialist distribution, the delivery of steel, construction materials and control panels, to last-mile deliveries – features a spacious Globetrotter cab, with plenty of room for long days and nights out on the road. The drivers have access to a fridge and microwave oven, as well as a built-in navigation system which features improved maps adapted to truck-specific needs and benefits from automatic map updates.
The emphasis on enhanced driver experience supports David Bratt & Sons’ wider strategy of boosting operational efficiency, reducing driver turnover, and maintaining long-standing service standards.
The FH Aeros are covered by a Volvo Gold Contract, guaranteeing maximum uptime and peace of mind and join a commercial vehicle fleet of 70 trucks and 60 trailers.
Founded in 1958 with a single vehicle, David Bratt & Sons has evolved into a modern, diverse logistics operation offering warehousing and haulage services, with a fleet that includes flatbed, curtainside, forklift and crane-equipped vehicles.
