The Commercial Motor 477-mile test route offers a comprehensive and transparent assessment of fuel efficiency, combining a demanding real-world mix of operating conditions including motorway driving, trunk roads and steep gradients.
On day one, the circuit begins in Nuneaton, joining the A5 before travelling north on the M6 all the way to Gretna Green and then further into Scotland via challenging regional roads. Day two marks the return south on the A1, M18, M1 and M69 before finally returning to Nuneaton on the A5. At key points along the way, time, distance and fuel levels are recorded, so that the level of fuel consumption for different situations can be calculated.
Previously, the Volvo FH 460 with I-Save held the title of the most fuel-efficient 44-tonne tractor unit, achieving 9.82 mpg in 2022. However, the Volvo FH Aero 6x2 Globetrotter XL that completed the course this time took things to an all-new level.
“Volvo didn’t just break its own record – it absolutely smashed it,” says Will Shiers, Editor of Commercial Motor. “The FH Aero has proved its fuel-efficiency credentials and now stands clear at the top of our fuel test rankings.”
Commenting on the test, Christian Coolsaet, Managing Director of Volvo Trucks UK & Ireland, says: “This result is a testament to Volvo’s unwavering commitment to progress and sustainability. The FH Aero represents the next generation of long-haul transport — combining world-leading efficiency with premium driver comfort and cutting-edge design. Every litre of fuel saved helps reduce emissions, improve fleet performance, and support our customers on their journey to a cleaner and greener future.”
Engineered from the ground up for maximum aerodynamic efficiency, the Volvo FH Aero is the most streamlined truck ever produced by the Swedish manufacturer.
Its redesigned cab features a longer, more sculpted front profile, reshaped bumper and air deflectors, plus integrated camera monitoring system – all meticulously developed to reduce aerodynamic drag. Every contour of the FH Aero serves a purpose: to help air flow smoothly around the truck. The result is not only improved fuel economy but also enhanced stability, quieter operation, and lower CO₂ emissions.
Combined with Volvo’s advanced I-Save powertrain, turbo compound engine technology, and the predictive I-See system, the FH Aero delivers exceptional performance and drivability while keeping fuel consumption to an absolute minimum.
Regardless of which powertrain customers choose – diesel, electric or gas – all variants of the new FH Aero benefit from lower energy consumption, longer range and a superior level of safety and driving experience.
