Felixstowe-based container haulage operator Martello Transport has continued its relationship with Volvo Trucks, acquiring 25 new FH Aero 460 6x2 tractor units. The latest deliveries reinforce Volvo’s position as the main marque within the company’s circa 90-strong truck fleet, with around 70 vehicles now carrying the manufacturer’s Iron Mark.

NEWS SUMMARY:

  • Martello Transport acquires 25 Volvo FH Aero tractor units, with the vehicles joining a fleet predominantly supplied by the Swedish manufacturer
  • New FH Aeros support nationwide container haulage operation, covering up to 150,000 km per truck each year
  • Fuel efficiency, driver preference and strong residual values support the customer’s latest Volvo fleet investment

Supplied by Matt Kubot, Transport Solutions Executive at Volvo Truck and Bus Centre South & East, the trucks will be deployed in Martello Transport’s domestic container haulage operation, transporting containers between ports, distribution hubs, and customer sites across the country. Typically on the road five days a week, the new Aeros will each clock around 150,000 km annually, remaining on the fleet for at least four years.

Danny Huwen, Director, Martello Transport, says: “We’ve built a strong relationship with Volvo Trucks and that’s reflected in the scale of our investment in the brand. Its trucks consistently deliver the reliability, fuel efficiency and driver appeal we need from vehicles operating across a demanding nationwide haulage network.

“The FH Aero is a natural fit for our fleet because our business depends on delivering a dependable, efficient service to customers all over the UK. The combination of excellent fuel economy, strong driver acceptance and the backing of Volvo’s repair and maintenance support gives us complete confidence in the whole package.”

Fuel saving technology

The business’ new FH Aeros feature a Euro VI-compliant D13TC Step E engine producing up to 460 hp and a peak torque of 2,600 Nm, benefited by turbo compounding technology.

This extends the fuel economy potential even further by introducing an extra turbine after the turbocharger to reuse excess fuel from the exhausts, which is then converted to torque directly on the crankshaft. The engines are paired with Volvo’s popular 12-speed I-Shift automated gearbox technology, plus I-See predictive cruise control. The latter allows the driver to tackle hills and gradients in a higher gear, saving fuel without losing speed.

Volvo’s Camera Monitoring System (CMS) replaces the wing mirrors, contributing to further aerodynamic performance while also boosting safety and visibility. The CMS also increases the driver’s field of view and performs strongly in rainy and dark conditions, direct sunlight and even when driving in tunnels.

The customer’s operation is supported by Volvo Connect, granting the business detailed insight into metrics such as fleet efficiency, driver behaviour and vehicle location to help maximise fuel savings.

The new vehicles feature spacious Globetrotter cabs – creating an ideal working environment for the firm’s drivers – and are all backed by a Volvo Gold Contract, including preventive maintenance and repairs to guarantee complete peace of mind, as well as a comprehensive and personal service.

Established in 2017, Martello Transport is a leading container haulage specialist, providing nationwide transport services from all major UK ports and logistics hubs.
