NEWS SUMMARY:
Supplied by Alistair Mann, Area Sales Manager, Crossroads Truck & Bus, the truck arrives as a direct replacement for a model previously supplied by a competing manufacturer, with Volvo selected following a successful demonstrator trial with the customer. On the road five days a week, the FH Aero will be primarily used for livestock haulage, transporting pigs between the company’s farms.
Richard Riley, Joint Managing Director, Yorkwold Pig Pro, says: “Our vehicles are regularly faced with demanding working conditions, so reliability and driver acceptance are essential. After spending time with the Volvo FH Aero and seeing how it performed in day-to-day use, we felt it offered a package that suited both our business and our driver requirements.
“As a family-run business, we take a long-term approach to fleet investment. The strength of the Volvo product, together with the support available behind it, made this a straightforward decision for us.”
Engineered for demanding farming operations
Yorkwold Pig Pro’s Volvo is powered by a Euro 6-compliant D13TC Step E engine, which produces 500 hp and a peak torque of 2,800 Nm, benefited by turbo compounding technology. This extends the fuel economy potential even further by introducing an extra turbine after the turbocharger to reuse excess fuel from the exhausts, which is then converted to torque directly on the crankshaft.
The engine is paired with Volvo’s popular 12-speed I-Shift automated gearbox technology plus I-See predictive cruise control. The latter allows the driver to tackle hills and gradients in a higher gear, saving fuel without losing speed.
Designed with the driver in mind
The truck’s spacious Globetrotter cab has been specified to maximise driver comfort, with the added creature comforts including leather upholstery, dual armrests, electric air conditioning with a carbon filter and sun, mist and air quality sensors, tinted glass roof hatch, plus a microwave.
Yorkwold Pig Pro has also opted for Volvo Dynamic Steering, an ultra-responsive steering system designed to lessen driver steering force by up to 85%, helping increase road safety and reduce driver fatigue. The system combines conventional hydraulic power steering with an electric motor that’s fitted to the steering gear, offering perfect stability and control at all speeds.
“The FH Aero has made a strong early impression, particularly with the driver who will be operating it,” adds Riley. “He had spent his entire career driving another manufacturer’s vehicles and was naturally reluctant to move away from a brand he knew well. That’s why we made sure he had a thorough trial so he could experience the FH Aero in real working conditions before any decision was made. By the end of the trial, he was completely on board with the switch and spoke very highly of the truck.”
To guarantee maximum uptime and peace of mind, the new truck is backed by a Volvo Gold Contract, including preventive maintenance and repairs. The tractor unit is expected to remain on the fleet for at least five years.
Established in 1972, Yorkwold Pig Pro is a family-owned livestock business. Part of the Dewhirst Farming Group, the company is one of the UK's leading pig production businesses, managing approximately 8,000 breeding sows across multiple farms and supplying around 190,000 pigs annually.
