Volvo Group reports significant UK and Ireland carbon reductions in its quest for net zero
Volvo Group UK and Ireland has reduced its operational carbon emissions by 81% and energy consumption by 56% since 2010.

NEWS SUMMARY:

  • Third-party-verified data shows that Volvo Group’s UK and Ireland operations have reduced its carbon emissions by 81% and energy consumption by 56% since 2010
  • Multi-million-pound investment in dealer facilities mean that 12 locations now hold the highest EPC A rating
  • The achievement reflects significant progress in the Group’s ambition to achieve a net zero supply chain by 2040

The figures, which cover Volvo Group’s entire UK and Ireland portfolio – including Volvo Trucks, Renault Trucks, Volvo Buses and Volvo Penta – reflect more than a decade of sustained investment in energy efficiency, property improvements and carbon reduction initiatives.

The achievement complements the Group’s long-term commitment to decarbonisation, with the business’s ambition being to achieve a net zero supply chain by 2040, enabling its customers to operate zero-emission fleets by 2050.

“The scale of this achievement is something everyone across Volvo Group in the UK and Ireland can be proud of,” says Mike Draper, Head of Safety, Health, Environment and Quality, Volvo Group. “Sustainability is embedded in the way we operate, and these results are testament to years of collective continuous improvement across every part of the business.

“What makes this progress particularly encouraging is that it has been achieved while continuing to grow and support customers across the region. Through targeted investment in our facilities, smarter energy management and a long-term commitment to reducing our environmental impact, we’ve shown that meaningful emissions reductions can be delivered alongside a thriving operation.”

Among the key drivers behind the progress has been a programme of property improvements across the Volvo Group estate. Of particular note is a series of multi-million-pound upgrades to 12 Volvo Truck and Bus dealer locations – many originally constructed in the 1980s – which have been upgraded with sustainability-focused enhancements such as solar panels, smart LED lighting and air source heat pumps, meaning all now hold Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) A ratings.

The company’s energy data also challenges a common assumption around the transition to a lower-carbon future, with the Group collectively using 25% less electricity today than it did in 2010.

While the results achieved to date represent a significant milestone, Volvo Group is equally focused on the next stage of its sustainability journey. The business has identified a clear pathway to eliminate much of the remaining footprint as it works towards its long-term net zero ambitions.

“We have made exceptional progress over the past decade, but we also know exactly what comes next,” adds Draper. “We have a clear plan for tackling the emissions that remain and are committed to continuing our journey towards net zero, with future progress driven by continued investment in low-carbon technologies, infrastructure and energy solutions. The opportunity now is to build on this strong foundation.”
